#7: China's Provinces and Municipalities

from the introduction: China is a country that extends over a vast area of land and encompasses many cultures. The People's Republic of China divides this land and these cultures into administrative units that all answer directly to the central government. There are four different kinds of administrative units: province, autonomous region, municipality, and special administrative region (SAR). There are 23 provinces, five autonomous regions, four municipalities, and two SARs. Though China's geographic regions (northeast, northwest, etc.) are divided into several different administrative units, these regions often share similar histories and cultures. For this reason, the land, people, and culture under these local governments are discussed in groups pertaining to their geographical location. After reading this book and exploring resources on the CD-ROM, you will have a greater understanding of modern China and of the geographic and cultural features that have shaped it.
