#9: Chinese Traditional Music Instruments

From the Introduction:
For over 3,000 years, music in China has had deep cultural significance, helping people to pray, to think, to study, and last but not least, have fun. The connection between music and happiness is not at all superficial; the Chinese character meaning music is also the character that means joy and happiness.

There are four general categories of Chinese instruments: plucked, bowed, wind, and percussion instruments. These instruments have a rich history that extends back to ancient times. The number of Chinese instruments and kinds of music that have developed during this extensive history are so numerous that to discuss them all would fill many thick books. In this book, you will look at some of the most famous, and the most influential of them. You will not only read the interviews of some of the most famous Chinese musicians, but also listen to their spectacular works.

Instruments discussed include:
Plucked – Qin
Plucked – Zheng
Plucked – Pipa
Bowed – Jinghu
Bowed – Erhu
Wind – Flutes
Wind – Organs
Percussion – Rhythm in Wood
Percussion – Rhythm in Bronze
